Cloud Computing for Managers – (TPMs, PMs, SDMs)
Over the last couple of years, there has been a need for managers (TPMs, PMs, SDMs) to have a good knowledge of the workings of the cloud. We have seen the move from a three tire service-based architecture to microservices and containerized architecture. The next big change organizations are working on is moving to the cloud. Most if not all tech and non-tech companies are all moving to the cloud or are mid-way through the move.
With the push of moving applications to the cloud, knowing the fundamentals of the cloud is more important now more than ever. The question most people who are new to the cloud struggle with is what they need to learn about the cloud.
There are 100s of half-baked courses out there, but the most popular ones for TPMs are –
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate 2018
- Cloud Architecture: A Guide To Design & Architect Your Cloud
- Learn the A to Z of Amazon Web Services (AWS)
Let’s take a closer look at them one by one.
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect This is a fantastic course that I would recommend if you already have a good understanding of the cloud. This course is designed specifically for people who are interested in pursuing the AWS Solution Architect Certification.
It goes into a good of details on how each AWS service works and how to operate each one of them. There are also several hands-on labs that are covered.
Again to reiterate this is primarily designed keeping in mind students who are to get certified. It’s important to understand that it’s great to be certified but its not a must. This course, however, does not go into a lot of fundamental areas that are much needed for TPMs or PMs.
There are AWS certified TPMs I have interviewed who have an understanding of the various AWS components but have no clue on the larger picture or how the various services work together which in my opinion is more important for a TPM.
2. “Cloud Architecture: A Guide To Design & Architect Your Cloud” course, on the other hand, goes into a lot of the very basics. It starts with a good primer to the reader on topics like, IaaS, PaaS, SaaS and gives a good overview of why one should move to the cloud and its benefits and goes into various cloud migration strategies. It covers some very interesting fundamental areas as like single tenant vs multi-tenant architecture and cloud-native architecture. I love this course for the reason that it talks about everything leaders need to know about the cloud.
3. “Learn the A to Z of Amazon Web Services (AWS)” is another course by Cloud Experts on the educative platform. This is a fantastic course that goes through most of the AWS services and explains how you would use each of those services in the real world with architectural diagrams. Once you finish this course you should be able to design an application of the cloud using the various AWS products that are being offered. The other thing I liked about this course was the fact that its reading and not videos. This helps in saving time and reading only the areas you feel you need to touch upon. At the end of the day, it has you walking away with a decent knowledge of AWS.

So if you have a time crunch I would opt for (b) & (c) or just (c) I believe this would give you the quickest learning.
